Histogram

Use the Histogram chart to count the occurrences of values in a column. A histogram shows a distribution of values.

Histogram.svg

A histogram is like a column chart, as both count the frequency of values.

Tip

To quickly add a histogram: in the Add tool window, start typing "histogram" and press tab to auto-complete. Then start typing the name of the column and press tab to auto-complete. You'll see a histogram with those values without needing to configure it.

Input

The Histogram chart can use either text or numeric columns.

Configuration

Use the following configuration options to configure the Histogram chart.

Note

This procedure gives configuration options through the Pipe module. If you have already created charts, you can access them through your Dashboards.

Configuring the Histogram chart
  1. Go to the Pipes module from the side navigation bar.

  2. From the Pipes tab, click an existing pipe to open, or create a new pipe. To create a new pipe, read the Creating a pipe documentation.

  3. In the Pipe builder, add at least one data source to your pipe. For more information on adding a data source, see the Data Input tool.Data Input

  4. Add tools to build out your pipe. For more information about adding tools to your pipe, see the Using the Pipe builder canvas documentation.

  5. Create a chart from your pipe by clicking Charts on the canvas toolbar.

  6. Click Create Chart.

    The chart page opens.

  7. From the configuration pane, go to the Setup tab, and select the tool that you want to create a chart for.

    Note

Whatever tool you select in your pipe when you add the chart is selected by default.

  8. Under Chart type, start typing Histogram to filter the list, then click the Histogram graphic to select it.

  9. Under the X axis, select a column. The X axis populates the data along the chart's horizontal axis.

  10. Expand the Advanced field, click Show to select either Preview or Last built:

    • Preview displays the first 100 rows of your data from your last build.

    • Last build displays the first 1000 rows of your entire dataset from your last build.

  11. Under Number of bins, enter the number of bins, or click the arrows to increase or decrease the number. The Number of bins field only shows when you have numeric columns in your data.

For example, if you have a data range of 100, you will have 10 bins. Each bar in your histogram is 1-10 (bin 1), 11-20 (bin 2), and so on.

    Note

If you specify a number of bins but the number of unique values in the data is less than that number, fewer bins display.

  12. Under Sort, select to sort your chart data by None, Ascending or Descending.

  13. Click the Customize tab to add custom styling to your chart.
